“O woman, great is your faith!  Let it be done for you as you wish.”  And her daughter was healed from that hour.

(Matthew 15:28)

Today is the celebration of the Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, located in Rome.  As we all know, women are very special to the heart of God.  So many Catholic churches are named after Our Blessed Mother because of the very special role she played in the birth and life of our Savior.  It must please Jesus to see the love and honor we express to His Mom.  Aren’t we glad when someone does the same for our own earthly mothers?  In today’s Gospel reading, a girl was tormented by demons; and her mother would not relent until Jesus prayed with and for her.  Despite his disciples’ suggestion that she be sent away, our Lord heard that mother’s cry for her beloved daughter and healed her at that very hour. Amazing grace!  He also commented on how great that woman’s faith was,  as her persistence was truly admirable.  Brothers and sisters, this teaching and miraculous deliverance should give us hope and perseverance, knowing that Jesus is always in our midst, ready to hear and answer our calls for help.  When we, God’s people, pray and take the pains of earth to the doors of heaven, we can expect to receive signs, wonders and miracles of his love.  Although He might not always give us what we want, He always delivers what we need.

Our Father knows what’s best because He loves us the most!

Most Merciful Lord, you know what I need even before I pray.  Still, in my humanness, I cry out to you for your attention and your mercy regarding my present needs.  For you have told me that if I ask, I will receive; if I seek, I will find; and if I knock, the door will be opened to me.  Jesus, you never listened to the negative voices of others but only to the voice of your Father in Heaven.  Thankfully, we have benefited from your great obedience on the Cross and your holy dedication to us all.  Just as you heard that mother’s desperate plea for her beloved daughter, so you hear mine every day; and I am thoroughly convinced that there is miraculous power in your name and in your word.  Holy Spirit, thank you for saving me by the bath of rebirth and by renewal of my mind in your love.  Make me strong, loving, persistent and wise like you, oh Lord, and like your Blessed Mother Mary.  Alleluia!
